pPROM stands for preterm premature rupture of membranes. Basically, the amniotic sac holding baby breaks and waters are lost. Without this membrane, babies face serious developmental and health issues. Most babies, though, will simply not make it. This most often happens in the second trimester, though the third trimester sees waters going as well.

There is little research about pPROM. Most often it is chalked up to being a “fluke”. One known cause for pPROM, though still rarely addressed by doctors, is cervical insufficiency.
